Canisius Women's Basketball Preview

Hey I couldn't forget the ladies and since they start the season on November 9th against West Virginia, I should have gotten on this earlier.

So whats up?

Well the Lady Griffs are back going into Terry Zeh's 4th year with the squad. So this squad is all Terry Zeh's making. They are looking to improve on last years below .500 record in the MAAC and early exit from the MAAC Tournament. And looking at the roster they have a good mix of players, to get back to the NCAA tournament.

Senior Leadership

Unlike the Men's team who are deprived of Senior leadership, the Lady Griffs, have plenty of older experienced players. Though most are bench players and will serve more in helping the younger players. And Marie Warner will sit out the year because of transfer rules, (she transferred from Utah) Laura Buetow looks to anchor things in the center leading the team with 46 blocks.

Who will score?

With 3 of the top 5 scorers leaving last year. The Lady Griffs will have to find new scorers quick. But Amanda Cavo and Brittani Russell are back and will have to increase their averages to have this team compete. I would look to former Miss Basketball from Wisconsin, Ellie Radke to have a more improved role on the team. (Her high school team nickname was the Cheesemakers) They lost a lot of scoring in the off season, so some of the younger players will have to step into larger roles immediately.

Hey who they playing?

These ladies will be road warriors to start the season, with 9 of the first 12 on the road before the New Year. With a couple good opponents mixed in there. West Virginia, Notre Dame and Missouri State. After the 1/2 game against Rhode Island, it will be a all MAAC schedule, leading to the conference tournament.

Outlook

I'll admit to not watching this team much last year, but I do know they lost 3 very good players who were at the heart of the '05 tournament team. Most of the team now is made up of untested bench players, who will get their shot to show what they have. I'm a big fan of Terry Zeh and feel he'll get the ladies up, night in night out. But the inexperience bothers me. The early tough games against much better opponents will only help. And by March I see this team making the Semis at least.

Interesting tidbits

There seems to be someone blogging the road trip.

Anyway, Steve the Bus Driver is about to pull out onto Main Street and lead us to our dinner in Erie, Pa. I'm very excited about the food on this trip as tonight's dinner is at Damon's, easily my favorite chain restaurant.

Wow, it doesn't get any better then that.

As you would think there is a heavy Canadian influence. With 5 girls coming from the Great White North.

Hey back to Matt Lozar and his blog

Greetings from the Hampton Inn, which is the first of our many hotels this season. For those who didnt read my volleyball blog, youll realize that Im hotel snob, and as the roommate of coach Terry Zeh, Im sure our analysis of hotels and room features will get taken to another level. Quick lookover interesting layout, lot of furniture and a quick-working air conditioner.

Wait? He went along with the girls volleyball team? That I am jealous about. Seriously.

Anyway more about the Lady Griffs go here.
